“Kung pagiging
praktikal lang naman ang pag-uusapan, doon nalang tayo sa lesser evil,”
philosophy professor, Marc Aldous Baccay stated regarding the issue of public
calls for impeachment of President Benigno Simeon “Noynoy” Aquino III due to
the current issue of the Mamasapano incident.
Majority of selected influential
members of the Thomasian Community opposed to the idea of the impeachment of
the current president. The idea is
deemed to be impractical and that the citizens of the Philippines should let
Aquino finish his term instead of having him step down from his position.
“Hindi ako sang-ayon sa
impeachment kasi entitled si ‘PNOY’ sa six
years.” Baccay said. He also reasoned that the citizens should respect the
process and think about the consequences in every decision.
“Whenever the country goes
through certain problems and issues, citizens always demand for an impeachment.
It is not healthy.” Baccay further stated, adding that every administration has
its own shortcomings and that stepping down isn’t the best solution.
“Kung magbibitiw an gating
pangulo, dapat manggaling sa kaniya iyon at hindi dapat sa atin.” Assistant
Professor Jose Tolentino Olivar II stated. Olivar also further explained that
there are constitutional processes that impeachment should undergo in order to
be approved.
“We should give what is due.”
Olivar added. He also further discussed that time allotted for reviewing the
decision wouldn’t be enough and by the time that the government would have come
up with a final decision, Aquino would have been done with his term.
“As much as possible, given our
political landscape right now and given all the problems that we are struggling
through, we should not think of anything that will seriously rock our political
system.” Assistant Professor Anita Garcia stated.
Senior Journalism student and
Editor of The Varsitarian, Ralph Joshua Hernandez also opposed to the idea of
impeachment. He argued that six years of presidency is too short to make a long
term reform and the impeachment will hamper what little progress have been
made.
In contrast to the stand of the
previously mentioned personnel, the Editor
of The Flame, Jenina Avaceña stated that she agrees to the idea
of the Aquino stepping down from the position.
“Masyado tayong nag-focus sa pamilyang Aquino.” Avaceña said. She further stated that leaders shouldn’t be
elected based on their family background and that others should be given a
chance to lead the country.
In contrast to others who oppose
of the idea of Vice President Jejomar “Jojo” Binay Sr. becoming the next
president, Avaceña stated that she has no problem
with Binay taking over Aquino’s position.
She further stated that Binay should be given
a chance to lead the country and that people are opposing to let him lead
because he is being put into a bad light.
Avaceña proclaimed that in the
next election, she would like Senator Mirriam Defensor Santiago to be the next
president the upcoming elections. She admired
Santiago for her strong conviction which she believes to be a good
quality of a leader.
