On Stereotyping Journalists: How the Korean Drama, Pinocchio Depicted Journalists

The Korean Drama, “Pinocchio”, is centered on how things work around the News Reporting Industry. As Choi  Dalpo and Choi Inha embark on their journey to become News Reporters, they witness how reporting incidents can change people’s lives.

They observe how hard a journalist’s life is and how difficult it is to find news to report. Upon training to become journalists, they realize that not everything in the news is true and how at times journalist would have to sensationalize their news in order to increase the ratings of their news channel.

In “Pinocchio”, it was shown how news can change the lives of the people involved in the story. It was seen in the story, how words are truly powerful and how gathering of information is truly crucial in making a news report.

In the Korean Drama, journalists were depicted as source of information in the society. The series showed how people greatly depend on news and how they rely on journalists for facts.

It showed different kinds of journalists in the industry. One of which is through the character of Song Cha Ok who would do anything to have a story to be reported on time, even if it means having to hurt or attack other people in the process.

Song Cha Ok’s character was depicted as a journalist who would be well described as a ‘dirty player’, someone who is very competitive in the industry and would do anything to be on top even if it means having a bad image and even if it means delivering wrong information to the public.

Another character to be mindful about is Hwang Gyo Dong who at first, made the same decision of reporting news that hasn’t been confirmed to be true, however redeemed himself by choosing to learn from the experience after seeing the effects of the news on the Ki family.

The two main characters, Choi Inha and Choi Dalpo, on the other hand, are two rookie journalists who were driven to be part of the industry in order to deliver the truth to the public.

Choi Inha, who is the daughter of reporter Song Cha Ok, became inspired to be a reporter after realizing that through becoming a journalist, she will be able to clarify rumors that disrupt one’s reputation.

As a person with “Pinoccio Syndrome,” Choi Inha felt that she will be a good reporter. She believed that her incapability to lie is an advantage for her to become a journalist who disseminates reliable information.

Choi Dalpo, on the other hand, decided to be a journalist because of his past experience as Ki Hamyung, realizing that through becoming a journalist, he can clear his father’s name.

“Pinnochio” showed viewers that even though a lot of journalists are eager to find good stories to tell the public, these journalists each have different motives for announcing the report.-Some journalists value the popularity of the news, others value the facts and prefer to deliver reliable information to the public.
